PRELIMINARY RESEARCH

PROBLEM

  • Most of the bicycle racks on the sidewalk are small to avoid blocking pedestrians.

  • The bikes lock parallel to the roadside

  • There are also a lot of openging spaces for parking bicycles, locating nearby some shops selling daily necessities, thus, the bikes in this place are typically common road bicycles with Bas- kets at front for user to leave shopping items

USER IMAGE /PERSONA

  • People who mainly use bicycles with baskets, such as housewives/housemen.

  • Features: love shopping and usually carry wallets with them

  • Preference: a larger gap is used to lock the bicycle, and lock in a relatively wide space

DESIGN CONCEPT

PROTOTYPING

  • Shape: Interesting geometric shape, four basic models can be placed in different directions 2

  • Function: The gap (groove) created by the shape can lock the bicycle from different directions

  • Material: Corten steel: It is easy to mold into a variety of shapes, and can maintain excellent integrity over time, a protective layer against corrosion is formed on the surface. No need to paint for protection. The colour and texture have strong visual impact. indicate the sense of modernity.

  • Apply the features of the public facilities in Toronto, which are modular and linear.

  • The exploration of the system of the public bike that it can be formed to a integral part.

FABRICATION & INSTALLATION

The MAZE is composed with three parts, the body and pole and rod. The bike will be made by laser cutting the main part, welding four poles to the main body and inserting the rod with body and bottom part through down to the ground.

Material choice is Corten, which is economical and practical for mass production, it can eliminate the need for painting and if left outside, exposed to the elements, they will develop a rusted appearance in just a few months.

OPPORTUNITY

In terms of public bike system, it can be Placed singly, as well as placing it twice or even more, forming a bike station at an opening area, thus, it is playful.

It gives the sense of aesthetics of installation art that the shape are geometric and simple , reflecting the modern elements of design.
